Churchill Closure Impacts & Benefits
The impacts of closing the Churchill crossing on the Southgate neighborhood are discussed.
A viaduct carrying the trains above the Churchill intersection would achieve many of the grade crossing goals.
The viaduct preserves the current access to the Southgate neighborhood as well as permitting traffic to flow between El Camino Real and Alma.
Separating the traffic from the crossing will improve traffic flow at the intersection. This will reduce the queues that form on Churchill and Alma, if some alternate route for bikes and pedestrians is implemented.
The viaduct improves safety at the intersection because the tracks are elevated out of the way. Bikes and pedestrians would still need to cross traffic at Alma.
The viaduct would be a large structure that looms over the neighborhood. Various methods of hiding it could be implemented, but it would be 20-21 feet high with an additional 36 feet of towers. The design is incomplete, so the final aesthetic appearance of the viaduct is unknown.

The design goals and details of the Partial Underpass proposal are presented and evaluated by neighborhood.
